Sport 4 Life UK – Goals Rowley Regis Winter 2024
Sport 4 Life UK is the leading sport for employment charity in the West Midlands. Sport 4 Life UK’s mission is to engage, empower and inspire young people, helping them to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in life.
Sport is a vital part of the organisation’s work, as they believe that it has the power to transform young people’s lives. Sport 4 Life UK uses sports to engage young people in positive activities, develop their physical and mental health, build their self-esteem, and develop their teamwork and leadership skills. The organisation runs a range of sports programmes, including football, basketball, and other team sports, as well as fitness and wellbeing programmes. These programmes are designed to cater to young people’s interests and abilities, helping them to enjoy the activities and develop their skills in a fun and supportive environment.
One of Sport 4 Life UK’s most significant sports programmes is their holiday camps, which are designed to provide young people with the opportunity to have fun, make new friends, and stay active during the school holidays. The camps offer a range of sports and activities, including team sports, adventure activities, and creative workshops. The camps are open to young people of all abilities and are a great way to encourage them to try new things and develop new skills.

What activities are offered?
Each day during our HAF programmes, two hours will be dedicated to physical activities. These will be split into two one-hour sessions either side of lunch. S4L will deliver a range of different sports and physical activities so young people can engage in the sports they enjoy as well as trying new sports, providing a more diverse experience. Sport sessions will be varied so that we are ensuring an inclusive experience for all who attend.
We have vast experience mentoring and coaching young people aged 11-16, and therefore recognise the need to make discussions around career aspirations structured and outcomes-based, as well as engaging and enjoyable. Our qualified mentors will work one-on-one and in group sessions to help young people understand key skills employers and looking for, and how to demonstrate these. We will run mock interviews and CV workshops to help participants attain a better understanding of how application processes work. A previously successful activity that has proven very popular with our participants is a series of ‘Dragons Den’ style events, where participants pitch ideas to the staff from our corporate partners. Mock interviews with non-S4L staff have also proven very beneficial for the young people in attendance, because of the increased credibility associated with the feedback from real employers.

What makes this activity inclusive?
S4L are always willing to adapt to meet individual circumstances wherever we are able to do so. Whilst we are not specialists in delivering services to children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, we will work with each parent/carer and the young person to understand how we can accommodate and include them. Each case will be risk assessed with the intention of being able to include any individual as long as it is safe and practical. S4L strive to be adaptable wherever possible, so that we are meeting our responsibilities as an inclusive provider. During our experience delivering holiday sports camps to young people, S4L have worked with multiple children with special educational needs. All our staff are qualified coaches with robust safeguarding training, and therefore understand the importance of a tailored approach to supporting each individual. We know certain adjustments may need to be made, such as ensuring inclusion of particular sports or providing dedicated support during enrichment activities. Working with parents/carers to understand each child’s specific needs will be vital to ensuring the appropriate adjustments are made.
To discuss the needs of their child, parents should contact:

What they say about us
“My son has been twice now and loved it Thanks to the coaches for everything. Even the food was a hit and stuff he wants to keep trying at home. He met great new friends had a lot of fun and learned a lot about fair playing and working great as a team. Every day he came home excited for the day after”
“The staff were welcoming and everyone made to feel included, so very inclusive no matter anyone’s difference. My nephew felt safe to stay the duration of the session, which I was surprised he wanted to stay until the end, which was amazing. He loved taking part in Dragons Den, he bought himself a McKenzie T shirt with his JD voucher, so thank you to all the Team for helping my child get lots of movement and exercise”
“They enjoyed the sporting options and it was nice for them to be active and play in a safe environment in the holidays. As I mentioned previously in my email. My eldest is apprehensive about social situations so I was pleased that he took himself out of his comfort zone and attended the sessions. My youngest enjoyed the basketball very much”
